CONTEMPORARY HILLSIDE HOUSE IN THE SCOTTISH BORDERS

Designs for a new home with a spectacular hillside setting aimed to optimise the uninterrupted panoramic views of the Scottish Borders. The shape of the building was designed to respond to the drumlin formation it was nestled into. This also reflected the geometry of the client's treasured racing motorbike, which will form a central focal point in the new home. A stepped configuration of the floor plates enabled the house to minimise it’s visual impact on the rural hillside and the stone facades and overhanging roof form aimed at providing maintenance free, robust protection from the weather in an exposed location. Interior spaces pivot around a central hallway with a focal point of a motorbike, which served as inspiration for the building form. The layout minimised the use of long corridors and aimed to provide a home with an adaptable layout that could be passed on and used by different generations of a family – initially by a retired farmer and potentially in the future by a family with young children. The project benefited from planning oversight from Ferguson Planning. Follow this link for an overview of how we work with clients to interpret their brief for new or altered buildings.
