EXTENSION TO LISTED SCOTTISH FARMHOUSE

The notable former resident and consequential historic listing of this Georgian farmhouse near Duns dictated a more thoughtful approach to the modernisation and extension of the property to suit the current owner’s needs. Despite having been crudely rendered with dry dash in the mid 20th century, the gravitas of the Scottish location as the former home of James Hutton and a place of world-changing geological research required a sensitive response to the history of the building and setting. The design proposes the use brickwork that responds to both the layered geological formations that were investigated by Hutton and the unique listed garden wall that encloses the garden facing extension. Ground floor level rooms will benefit from new openings that improve the connection between living, kitchen and dining spaces and enable accommodation of large gatherings of family and friends. An indoor/outdoor fireplace/ barbecue will form a unique welcoming focal point that can be used by the family who have established food related businesses and enjoy entertaining guests.
